To Kill a Mock-Up Bird is a playful, modern reinterpretation designed specifically for the Demo Theatre. Inspired by Harper Lee’s beloved novel—but absolutely not bound to it—this production uses familiar themes as a springboard rather than a script.
Set in a present-day community where everyone seems to be rebuilding something—homes, relationships, reputations—the story follows a group of neighbours who discover an unfinished “mock-up” of a play hidden in the local library’s renovation plans. Determined to bring it to life, they embark on a charming, often chaotic attempt to stage a production that never actually existed.
Characters step in and out of scenes, improvise when the script dissolves, and sometimes rewrite the show in real time. The result is a lively demonstration of how a theatre website can handle evolving casts, fluid content, behind-the-scenes media, and playful storytelling devices.
Warm, clever, and self-aware, To Kill a Mock-Up Bird celebrates creativity, collaboration, and the joy of building something together — even when no one is entirely sure what it’s supposed to be.
